How to Pack Fragile Items for Moving: A Step-by-Step Guide
One of the biggest concerns during a move is keeping fragile belongings safe. Glassware, dishes, mirrors, artwork, and electronics require more preparation than everyday household items.
Fortunately, the right packing materials and techniques can significantly reduce the risk of damage.
Here are some practical tips from Walden Logistics to help you protect your delicate belongings.
1. Gather the Right Packing Materials:
Before packing fragile items, make sure you have:
Sturdy moving boxes in appropriate sizes.
Packing paper.
Bubble wrap or other suitable cushioning.
Packing tape.
Cardboard dividers.
Permanent markers and labels.
Specialty boxes for mirrors, artwork, or televisions when appropriate.
Avoid using damaged boxes or relying on thin grocery bags to protect delicate belongings.
2. Prepare Your Boxes:
Start by reinforcing the bottom seams of each box with packing tape.
Add a layer of crumpled packing paper or another cushioning material to the bottom. This helps reduce direct contact between fragile items and the box.
Use smaller boxes for heavy dishes and other dense belongings. Large boxes can become difficult to lift safely when filled with heavy items.
3. Pack Plates Vertically:
Although stacking plates flat may seem natural, individually wrapped plates are generally better protected when packed vertically in a properly cushioned dish box.
Wrap each plate separately and place cushioning between items.
Fill remaining gaps so the plates cannot shift during transportation.
4. Protect Glassware and Stemware:
Wrap glasses individually with packing paper.
For stemware, carefully cushion the stem and use suitable dividers or specialty glassware packaging.
Place heavier, sturdier items toward the bottom of the box and lighter items above them.
Never leave empty spaces that allow glasses to move freely.
5. Pack Mirrors and Artwork Carefully:
Mirrors and framed artwork often require specialty boxes or custom protective materials.
Protect corners, cushion the frame, and use an appropriately sized box.
For valuable artwork, consult a professional about suitable materials. Some wrapping products can damage delicate finishes or surfaces.
Clearly identify the package as fragile and communicate special handling requirements to your movers.
6. Prepare Electronics for Transportation:
If possible, use the original packaging for televisions, monitors, and other sensitive electronics.
Before disconnecting equipment:
Photograph cable connections.
Back up important data.
Remove loose accessories.
Follow manufacturer instructions for packing.
Keep cords and small components labeled.
Televisions and large monitors may require dedicated moving cartons.
7. Fill Empty Spaces:
Once fragile items are packed, gently fill remaining gaps with appropriate cushioning materials.
Items should not rattle or shift noticeably when the box is moved carefully.
Avoid overpacking boxes, which can increase pressure on fragile contents.
8. Label Everything Clearly:
Label each box with:
Its destination room.
A general description of its contents.
“FRAGILE” where appropriate.
“THIS SIDE UP” when orientation matters.
Labels help with organization, but proper packing remains the most important protection.
9. Keep Irreplaceable Items With You:
Consider personally transporting jewelry, family heirlooms, important documents, and especially valuable or irreplaceable belongings.
Discuss any high-value items with your moving company before moving day and review the applicable valuation and liability terms.
