Moving Pianos, Antiques, and Heavy Furniture: How to Prepare Specialty Items

Not every item in your home can be packed into a cardboard box.

Pianos, antiques, safes, artwork, large mirrors, and oversized furniture often require additional planning and special handling.

If you're preparing to move specialty items, here are some important steps to take before moving day.

Identify Specialty Items Early

When requesting a moving estimate, provide a detailed list of anything unusually heavy, fragile, valuable, or difficult to transport.

Examples include:

  • Upright and grand pianos.

  • Large safes.

  • Antique furniture.

  • Oversized sectional sofas.

  • Glass dining tables.

  • Large mirrors and framed artwork.

  • Marble or stone furniture.

  • Exercise equipment.

  • Large appliances.

The more information your moving company has, the better it can evaluate the job.

Measure Your Furniture and Access Points

Before moving day, measure the item's height, width, and depth.

Then measure doorways, hallways, stairwells, and elevators at both properties.

Pay attention to tight corners, narrow staircases, and low ceilings.

For especially large items, professional assessment may be necessary to determine whether the move can be performed safely.

Take Photographs

Photograph specialty items from multiple angles before the move.

Document their existing condition, including any scratches, cracks, or other imperfections.

Keep these photographs with your moving records.

Ask About Disassembly

Some furniture can be moved more safely after removing legs, shelves, doors, or other detachable components.

However, not every item should be disassembled.

Antiques and specialty equipment may have delicate connections or manufacturer-specific instructions.

Consult the mover or an appropriate specialist before taking anything apart.

Preparing a Piano

Pianos are particularly challenging because of their weight, internal components, and sensitivity to movement.

Different piano styles may require different handling methods.

Provide the mover with the piano's type, approximate dimensions, location, and information about stairs or access restrictions.

Do not attempt to lift or transport a piano without suitable equipment and trained assistance.

After relocation, allow the instrument to acclimate to its new environment before arranging tuning as recommended by a qualified piano technician.

Preparing Antiques and Artwork

Antique furniture may have delicate finishes, weakened joints, or components that cannot safely support ordinary lifting techniques.

Fine art may require specialty wrapping, custom crating, or professional art-handling services.

Avoid placing adhesive tape directly on finished surfaces.

Discuss especially valuable or irreplaceable pieces with the moving company in advance.

Moving Heavy Safes and Equipment

Safes and other extremely heavy items may exceed the safe capacity of ordinary moving equipment or building surfaces.

Provide accurate weight and dimensions whenever possible.

The moving company should evaluate access conditions, equipment requirements, and whether specialist assistance is necessary.

Never attempt to move extremely heavy equipment without an appropriate plan.

Review Coverage and Handling Arrangements

Before moving specialty items, review the applicable valuation coverage and liability terms.

Ask whether special handling, additional equipment, or third-party specialists are required.

Make sure these arrangements are reflected in the relevant estimate or service agreement.
